Historical
Background |
|
|
In
1955, James Mackie & Sons, Belfast, Northern Ireland,
set up a factory for manufacturing machineries for Jute
mills on the banks of river Hooghly, near the city of
Kolkata and named the company after the name of a
rivulet, LAGAN. They continued their operation till 1978
when Government of India took over control of the
company in its entirety. In 1987, the company became a
fully owned subsidiary of Bharat Bhari Udyog Nigam Ltd (BBUNL)
under Ministry of Heavy Industries, Government of India
and thus became a Central Public Sector
Undertaking (CPSU). |

Lagan
was disinvested in July 2000. |
|
|
The
process enriched Lagan in more ways than one. The most
significant of which being the focus on intensive R&D to
provide future-generation, cost-effective and value-added machinery for the
jute industry. Lagan, always in
the quest of excellence, is on the lookout to expand its
market and product range. This includes development of
new products, diversification of markets and
value-addition through lateral and vertical integration
to persistently improve upon the bottom line. The
company is working on doubling its stature within the
next couple of years or so. |

Lagan
Engineering Company Ltd, (earlier known as The Lagan
Jute Machinery Company Ltd.) is one of the leading jute
mill machine manufacturer in India. Our product range
includes Spreader, Breaker Card, Finisher Card, all types
of Drawings and Spinning Frames, Flyer Twisting and all
the other modern machinery needed in the jute industry. |

We also do the jobbing work
in our captive foundry, for Grey Iron & SG Iron Casting.
We can manufacture casting up to 700 Kg, as per the
drawing provided by the customer. |

|
Mr. Bijay Kumar Kajaria , Chairman of the Board and Director of the
Flagship Company MREL Group has brought a new approach
in the sphere of business, expanded its boundary,
diversified into trading in allied fibres namely manila,
hemp, synthetics etc. He has been successful in
transforming a Trading Export House to a strong
manufacturing base. In his 40 he was honoured with the
position of Vice President of the Calcutta Jute Fabrics
Shippers Association. |

Mr. Anirudh Kajaria
representing the fourth generation of the family has
immediately joined Lagan as a CAO after completing
his B. Sc. in Business Management from Babson College,
Boston, USA. Later he has been promoted as Managing
Director of Lagan, where he has taken keen
interest in the activities of the company especially in
the areas of Finance and Administration. |

Mr.
Gordon Mackie, one of the Directors in the Board of
Lagan, is a widely recognized expert in textile
engineering, marketing and process technology and is
a celebrated International Textile Consultant. He joined
the James Mackie & Sons Ltd as a Trainee Sales Engineer.
From 1981 to 1989 he was the Chairman & Chief Executive
of James Mackie & Sons Ltd. A renowned author of many
technical publications, Mr. Mackie undertook several
studies of different sorts and authored many International Books. |

Mr.
Shyamal Ghosh, a Director in the Board of the
Company, he was Secretary of the Ministry of Textiles,
Government of India. He also held a number of
prestigious positions under Government of India in
different Ministries during his tenure. |

Mr. Ajay Kumar Kajaria ,
Director also joined the family business just after
completing his graduation in commerce stream. A man of
good economic foresight, he has been successful in
strengthening the financial base of the company. His

in his excellence in international marketing. Now 40, he
has been honored with the post of President,
Merchants’ Chamber of Commerce, Calcutta. |

Mr.
Saibal Baul : Besides being a Director in the Board
of the company he is also the Managing Director of
Braithwaite Burn & Jessop Construction Ltd. a Central
Public Sector Undertaking (CPSU). |

Mr.
Vishnu Kumar Fogla : A Mechanical Engineer from
B.I.T. is in the Board of Kamakhya (India) Ltd. and Sai

Metallurgical Graduate from BE College, Shibpur (W.B.),
and M.Tech (Foundry Technology) from IIT Kharagpur has
over 25 years of Worldwide working experience in the
technical aspects of various projects in the foundry
division. Previously worked in Hindustan Engineering
Industries Ltd. and Braithwaite Ltd. (a Public Sector
Undertaking). |

K S Chopra (Deputy General Manager – Commercial) :
Graduate from IJT as a Jute Technologist, worked in
various capacities of the organizations, was
instrumental in promoting our products in both domestic
and international markets. |

Sen Sharma (Manager – R & D ): A First Class
Mechanical Engineering Graduate from Jadavpur University
(W.B.). Having more than 20 years of experience and a
strong technical and analytical skill. Has been a key
player in developing various cost-effective, value-added
machineries for the industry. |

Dr. A
Bhuniya ( Asst. General Manager-Q.A.) : A Doctorate
in Metallurgy from B.E. College and Science University,
Shibpur. Has more than 15 years experience in field of
Quality Assurance. Has worked for Hindustan Motors Ltd.,
Arvind Engineering Works Ltd. |

Mr B N Kochar : A B.Tech Graduate with specialization
in Textile, has more than 40 years of experience in
various jute mills. His innovative ideas and technical
knowledge has positioned the group at the peak on the

Dutta : Over 35 years of working experience in
various capacities in Indian Jute Industries’ Research
Association and retired as Principal Project Coordinator
in 2001. He has about 50 publications in the National
and International Journals & proceedings of conference
and seminars and three patents. |

Group Companies |

Upon
disinvestment in July 2000, Murlidhar Ratanlal
Exports Ltd (MREL)– the noted export house for
jute products - acquired 74% of the stake in Lagan
thereby making Lagan its subsidiary. The Murlidhar
Ratanlal Group (MREL Group) was founded in 1964
by Late Sri Murlidhar Kajaria and Late Sri Ratanlal
Kajaria, which in course of time, became one of the most
promising Jute export house in West Bengal. From
an annual turnover of meagre
Rs 2.5 million in the sixties, the Group turnover
has now exceeded Rs 2.5 billion. Other companies under the MREL Group

Kajaria Yarns &
Twines Ltd. (KYTL)- A 100 % Export Oriented Unit
(EOU) equipped with imported machinery to produce finest
quality jute yarns of 100 to 9000 tex to meet the
growing overseas demand. |

The Hastings Jute
Mill. (HJM)- One of the oldest mills in India
situated on the bank of the Hooghly on a land of about
five acre and about 35 km away from Kolkata. It is a
composite mill having the divisions like Raw Jute,
Batching, Spinning, Weaving, and Finishing. |

|
The group has recently
acquired India Jute Mill in Srerampore .The
mill has a capacity in excess of 100 M.T. per day jute products
such as hessian, sacking and value added JDPs. |
