Historical Background

In 1955, James Mackie & Sons, Belfast, Northern Ireland, set up a factory for manufacturing machineries for Jute mills on the banks of river Hooghly, near the city of Kolkata and named the company after the name of a rivulet, LAGAN. They continued their operation till 1978 when Government of India took over control of the company in its entirety. In 1987, the company became a fully owned subsidiary of Bharat Bhari Udyog Nigam Ltd (BBUNL) under Ministry of Heavy Industries, Government of India and thus became a Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSU).

Lagan was disinvested in July 2000.

The process enriched Lagan in more ways than one. The most significant of which being the focus on intensive R&D to provide future-generation, cost-effective and value-added machinery for the jute industry. Lagan, always in the quest of excellence, is on the lookout to expand its market and product range. This includes development of new products, diversification of markets and value-addition through lateral and vertical integration to persistently improve upon the bottom line. The company is working on doubling its stature within the next couple of years or so.
